Which Perennials Should You Cut Back This Fall?
During the fall season, there are many different garden tasks to get done, one being cutting back your perennials.
This can be tricky if you have never done this before because perennials can mean different plants to different people, especially to beginning gardeners.
Some perennials need to wither down to the ground before you cut them back and others don’t need to do this.
It can be plant specific and takes time to get to know each plant and types of perennial plants to then know how to properly care for them.
Here are some herbaceous perennials you should wait to cut back until they have withered to the ground this fall:
-
Hostas
-
Shasta diasy’s
-
Campanula
-
Crocosmia and Gladiolus, and
-
Canna Lily
Woody Perennials you don’t need to wait to wither to the ground first before cutting them back this fall are:
-
Hydrangea
-
Hot Lips Sage
-
Candy Tuft, and
-
Lavender
And if you want to support beneficial insects and wildlife, don’t cut your herbaceous perennials back until late winter or early spring when you see the first flush of growth.
That way insects and wildlife can have somewhere to live over the winter in your garden.
