What’s the Difference Between Annuals and Perennials?

A question we get from new gardeners a lot is what is the difference between annual plants and perennial plants? It can be confusing if you don’t know so here it is.

  • An annual plant is one that germinates from seed, grows and flowers, producing seed for next year, and finally withers and fully dies. This happens over or within one calendar year.
  • A perennial plant is one that germinates from seed, grows and flowers to then produce seed, just like the annual plant, but doesn’t fully die. A perennial will slow down growth, go dormant, or even die down to the ground, but will regrow from the same plant roots and tissues it grew the previous year.

The difference is annuals grow for one year and perennials keep coming back year after year.
