Quick Spring Planting Steps

Planting your plants in the ground beds, raised beds, or in containers can be fast and easy.

The steps listed below can be used in any planting situation, but is especially useful for ground or raised garden beds.

Here are your quick planting steps:

  1. Using a shovel or trowel clear away debris and mulch to then dig your planting hole down ONLY as deep as your potted plant soil height AND twice as wide as deep.
  2. Make small mound in the center of the hole and score the hole sides so they aren’t smooth.
  3. Water the planting hole thoroughly.
  4. Then, remove your plant from its pot to then break up the soil around the roots so they are looser and aren’t in the shape of the pot.
  5. Once this is done, set your plant in the hole directly on top of the mound and splay the plant roots out away towards the hole’s sides.
  6. Then place the soil you removed back into the planting hole over the splayed roots and keep filling the hole, packing the soil lightly with your gloved hands.
  7. You should have some soil leftover, so make a dike or berm around your plant at the edge of the planting hole and then place mulch over the soil and berm where the mulch is kept 2-inches away from the plant stem.
  8. The very last thing to do is to always water your new plants.
