Have you been wondering if you are performing the correct type of cut on your perennial plant, shrub, or tree? An incorrect cut could lead to damaged plants that cease to grow or grow incorrectly.
Before getting started on your cuts, you need an understanding of the difference between pruning your plants vs. deadheading them.
Read on and listen to learn more about these two important tasks including tools that can help you get the job done.
In our DIY Garden Minute Ep. 2 – “Pruning vs. Deadheading, Revealed,” we’ll discuss the difference between these two important tasks.
This episode is for those of you who are a bit new to gardening and especially to pruning or deadheading and need help with beginning plant maintenance.

Pruning vs. Deadheading
Pruning and deadheading are garden maintenance tasks that are performed for different purposes but both tasks involve the removal of plant parts.
Read on below to learn a quick overview of the two tasks. For more information, listen to the podcast player above.
Pruning
You prune plants in order to remove stems, branches, and even roots that cross or rub, are diseased or dying tissues, and/or for plant shaping.
This action helps to keep your plants healthy and shaped.
Deadheading
Deadheading occurs when plant flowers are snipped or cut off after they are spent.
This is performed seasonally according to the plant’s bloom time and helps keep your plants looking attractive and clean. In addition, deadheading helps to free plants from pests or diseases and, for some plants, to promote the next flowers to bloom.
Pruning Tools
For a successful pruning session, you will need a mix of both hand and power pruning tools. Whenever possible, we always try to promote environmentally-friendly or efficient tools, such as hand or electric-powered. However, sometimes you just can’t get around the massive strength of a gas-powered chainsaw.
By the way, we firmly believe in honest reviews and have not recommended any tools that we do not or have not personally used.
Whether in our own yard, private clients, or our previous landscaping business, these tools have proven indispensable over the years. While you may not need every tool on the list, most of these tools at your disposal would be handy.
