You might be thinking about pruning your plants, but you aren’t sure which ones you can prune right now, and, you might be asking yourself “Are there any shrubs I can prune in the winter”?

The answer is YES, you can prune some shrubs in the winter to get them ready for this coming spring and summer.

Here are 7 different hardwood shrubs you can prune right now!

They are:

  1. Lilacs
  2. Forsythia
  3. Spirea
  4. Cotoneaster
  5. Camellia
  6. Viburnum
  7. English Laurel

Now, this time of year these plants, and many others, can have dead or diseased wood, or rubbing or crossing branches that need to be removed using mostly thinning cuts.

Don’t perform any shape pruning on these plants until after they are done blooming.

Only use thinning cuts and don’t remove more than 1/3 of a plants mass at any one time of pruning.
