3 Signs to Look For at Local Nurseries To Know If Plants Are Healthy

You are at your local nursery or box-store to look for new plants to add to your garden.

You want to make sure you are buying the healthiest plants possible, so how do you know what to look for?

Here are 3 signs you can find healthy plants to buy at your local nursery:

  1. Look at each plants leaves and shoots. Are the leaves and even shoots upright and not wilting or looking parched? If so, then it’s not dehydrated and is a good plant to buy.

  2. Look at each plant for circling roots. When you remove the plant from the container it is in, are there any circling roots, and, if so, how much? A lot? Just a few? If a lot, then this plant will need a lot more care after being transplanted.

  3. Look at each plant’s root coloring. Are the roots more of a white color or are they more brown or black? The lighter and brighter the root color, the better chance the roots are healthy. Brown or black colored roots mean there is die back and possible other issues.

Also, look for discoloration, damage, misshapen leaves and stems, plants looking too small or too big in their container and a lot more can visually tell you that you shouldn’t buy that plant.
