Hi there! We are Sean and Allison McManus.

Together, we have over 20 years of experience and education in the fields of horticulture, landscape management, pest control practices, and science education!

We teach because we love what we do!

A Little Bit About Our Pasts and What Makes Us Unique

We feel lucky to say that we have been doing this for a long time!

Sean worked on his family’s Rhododendron farm in Washington state while growing up. There he learned valuable, lifelong skills such as how to care for plants at an early age and how to identify different species of rhododendrons.

This early training sparked his lifelong passion for horticulture which he pursued through two degrees at Washington State University, a private landscape business, and now Spoken Garden!

Today, Sean possesses a Master’s in Environmental Horticulture from Washington State University and several other horticulture, landscaping, or gardening-related certificates. He has over 8+ years of experience in Industrial Garden Maintenance and 12+ years operating a private landscape and consulting company.

Allison’s love of the outdoors began in her backyard while growing up, also in Washington state. Both her parents curated her sense of wonder and fascination with the natural world around her. From an early age, her father instilled in her his love of all the tree species around the yard and taught her how to identify them by name, including their Latin names.

From helping in the garden to pulling weeds to picking fruit from (and climbing) their various fruit trees, she discovered her love of gardening, planting flowers, and observing animals.

Today, Allison possesses a Master’s in Teaching and is a National Board certified middle school science educator. Through trial and error over the past 10+ years, she has successfully maintained several vegetable gardens and beds full of flowers. She loves attracting all kinds of pollinators and is proud of the fact that their yard is a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
