Primrose Care

Primroses in general like:

  • Considered an evergreen plant in milder climates, but are marketed as annuals in different areas too.
  • Grow as a foliage rosette and the flowers form and open in the center of the foliage
  • Sunset has this plant zoned for A3, 2-6, 14-17, and 21 – 24
  • Grow about 8-inches tall, 1 foot wide
  • Flowers single on a stem, but can have 2-3 flowers per stem on some strains
  • Flowers come in white, yellow, red, blue, brown, bronze, or win colored
  • Some strains have sweet-scented flowers
  • Prefers full sun in cooler climates and partial shade or dappled sun in warmer climates
  • Fertilized on a regular basis with a well-balanced fertilizer
  • Planted in organically rich, well-drained soil, and have mulch around them to keep roots cool
  • Need regular watering
  • Native to the cool regions of Northwest Europe, Algeria, Armenia, and Turkey
  • Can be divided after flowering in spring
