Pine needles can be extremely unsightly and annoying.
They create a huge mess all over the yard and you can never keep them all picked up.
Luckily, there are many benefits of repurposing them and putting them to good use as a garden mulch.
You just have to know which plants prefer this type of mulch
In “Pine Needle Mulch Benefits, Exposed” – DIY Garden Minute Ep. 62 – we’ll explain how you can re-purpose those pine needles in your garden.
This episode is meant for any level of gardener who wants to learn about the benefits of pine needle mulch.
Pine Needle Mulching
There are several reasons to choose pine needles for your mulching needs.
It all depends on your preferences.
The difference between using pine tree needles vs. all other types of mulch is that when the needles breakdown, they will increase the acidity of your garden soil.
As a result, the needles will drop the pH of the surrounding soil.
This is great news for your acid-loving plants, like rhododendrons and azaleas.
Be sure the pine needles are both pest-free and disease-free.

Importance of Mulching
Pine tree needles work well as a mulch in your garden because they do the same exact thing that arborist or other types of woodchip mulch do.
All types of mulch are important because they:
- Suppress weeds
- Help retain soil moisture
- Help reduce erosion
- They keep plant roots cool in the summer and insulated in the winter
- They add to the overall aesthetic of your garden

Successful mulching takes proper skill and the right tools.
In order to get started, you need a good pitchfork, rake, round shovel, a tarp, and probably a wheelbarrow.
