Whether you are new to gardening or have been gardening for a while, you should take inventory of your garden to know what you have. Your inventory can be really anything and everything you want it to be. It can be fancy or very simple. It can be a quick sketch or as close to a professional design as you want.

Making an inventory of your garden will

  • help you to care for your garden better and
  • be useful for any future planning, and building, and caring for your garden.

Any inventory should be made up of three things, being:

  1. A general list of everything in your garden from plants, number of beds, pathways, utilities and anything else worth mentioning.
  2. A sketch or drawing of your garden layout with notes and true North.
  3. Your area’s cold hardiness temperatures, and sun exposure during a general day.
