Container Gardening vs Ground-Bed Gardening
There are lots of gardeners thinking about starting to grow plants in containers right now.
And that’s really exciting!
If this is you, you might be asking yourself “what is the difference between growing plants in containers versus growing them in the ground”?

The biggest difference is that containers are in their own finite environment where you have to continually provide everything they need to thrive and survive. This includes the right soil, and amount of water and nutrients on a tightly maintained schedule.

In ground bed gardening, generally water, air, and nutrients can move through soil from high to low concentrations where plants can then take it up where needed. Replenishing these isn’t needed on as a tight schedule compared to container gardening.

One other difference is plants in containers have their roots exposed on all sides to extreme heat and cold temperatures that can lead to high plant stress and eventual root death. If temperatures are really extreme over time and the plant isn’t hardy enough, this can lead to the plants eventual death.

In Ground beds, plant roots are well insulated from extreme temperatures and can better regulate more consistent soil temperatures for healthier plants.
