3 Ways to Overwinter Your Mums
This fall you added colorful, bright blooming potted mums to your garden and now aren’t sure what to do with them over the winter months.
You would hate to be wasteful and throw them out, so what can you do to overwinter them?
First, you need to know what hardiness zone you live in and then compare that to the hardiness of your mums, being generally hardy in zones 5-8. Click here to learn more about Potted Mums.
The ultimate goal is to keep each plants’ roots and stems from feeling harsh freezing temperatures and here are our three ways to do this:
-
Move your potted mum up against your house or other building and under any available eaves to protect it and to receive any residual heat from the building.
-
Heal-in your potted mum by partially placing each container in a dug hole of a raised planter bed or mounting mulch up around the sides of the container.
-
Move your potted mum indoors on a garage or shed bench so it stays in temperatures between 30 and 50 degrees fahrenheit.
Make sure to remove any old and withered flower blooms either before or after you have moved your potted mums so they don’t harbor pests and diseases.
